There is no arguing that engine timing is crucial in not only developing the most horsepower possible, but to also keep the internal, controlled explosions occurring when they should. For many years, hot rodders have done their best to keep time by using timing chains that are adjustable, have rolling links, and incorporated tensioners. But, when timing gear drives were discovered, exact timing took on a new meaning.

Nornda Automotive knows a lot about engine timing, and their new timing gear sets for the LS engine prove it. “We came up with our new gear sets for the standard LS engine – LS1, 2, and 3, because the engines are getting to such a stage now, that they are on the verge of breaking timing chains,” according to Stan Huitema of Rollmaster.

Each gear set bolts on using a standard oil pump and timing chain cover, and features cam bushings for 0, 2, 4, and 6 degrees of timing advance. Hardened gears use precision-cut idler plates, and the gears are glass beaded to relive stress. A case-hardened roller shaft is employed for long bearing life, and drawn-cup needle bearings rated for 12,000-rpm are used. “A lot of testing has been done, and is ongoing. We look to get these into the market by February 2018,” Stan said.
