LT1 will soon get a stablemate.

As most of you already know, rumors about the upcoming ‘Vette have been spread across the web like wildfire. It can get overwhelming at times, but we have some good news! While we may not know exactly what kind of Corvette is coming, we now have a good idea of the most important thing– what it will be sporting under the hood.

A GM  document [2] surfaced which, after decoding, reveals that a 6.2-liter LT5 DOHC V8 is being slated specifically for the Chevrolet Corvette.

Déjà vu?

As a Reddit reader discovered, tucked away in an inconspicuous GM service department document detailing the internal codes the company will use for its 2018 model year vehicles [2] sits a table called “Passenger Car Engines for GMNA.” Check out the last entry at the bottom listing: “ENGINE GAS CYL, 6.2L, SIDI, DOHC, VVT, ALUM, GM,” It’s listed with the book code “Y,” which in internal GM lingo equals Corvette. It has its own internal name: LT5.

But, what ‘Vette will it go in?! Well, to us, the most obvious answer is the secret mid-engine supercar GM is working on. If Chevy is going to “reinvent the wheel,” with the C8, why not throw in a unorthodox motor too?

On the other hand, the soon to be released 2018 C7 ZR1 is supposedly going to be the most powerful Corvette yet, meaning if this new LT5 is getting shoehorned in, it will have to outdo the 650 horsepower 6.2-liter supercharged LT4. While it seems unlikely, Chevy just might pull it off.

Whatever it lands in will be one lucky engine bay. Stay tuned to Corvette Online for all the details.

Yeah, yeah this is a C4 ZR1 but this was the last time Corvette had a mulit-valve motor so we thought we’d refresh your memory. Don’t get crazy.
