A decade ago there are those who would have declared Cadillac irrelevant, out of touch, and dead as a brand. But a steady stream of new products and exciting performance vehicles has not only helped Cadillac regain relevancy, but market share as well. The V-series of Cadillac’s was a brilliant stroke of marketing and engineering, but going forward it looks like GM is ready to take some risks with it premium car brand.

Rumor has it that the upcoming entry level sedan, called the ATS, will be available with a twin-turbo V6, reports Car & Driver. This is a very good thing.

We can almost imagine GM execs sitting in their silver tower, looking with lust and envy on Ford’s EcoBoost engine sales, which have been exceeding expectations across the Blue Oval’s lineup. GM needs to get in on the turbo game, and while we’re all fond of throaty V8 engines, there’s a lot of potential in twin-turbo V6 engines as Ford has shown. According to Car & Driver, the engine will be a 3.0 liter V6 making 380 horsepower. That would mean more power than the Ford, with less displacement, likely resulting in better fuel economy.

With gas at $4 a gallon ($4.50 if you’re filling with premium) we’re sure even those who can afford a Caddy will appreciate saving some fuel. If GM does go down this path (and we hope they do) it will likely be a premium engine choice to keep costs down for the “baby” CTS. The 556 horsepower LSA engine could also be an option, perhaps the latest in the Cadillac V-series. And if GM does build a 380 horsepower V6, they’re sure to offer it in the Camaro down the road too, especially given the rumors that the ATS and Camaro could share a smaller platform going forward. And there ain’t nothing wrong with that.
