Corvette Stingray Painted For Detroit Art Museum Fundraiser

The 2014 Corvette Stingray doesn’t need much to draw people’s eye. It already has a beautiful sleek design, but to take it a step further, three GM designers recently vinyl wrapped a 2014 Arctic White Corvette Stingray and used it as a canvas for their creativity.

At a fundraising event at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD), over 200 watched as Casey Swanseger, 30; Tyler Mars, 28; and Haneif Katebi, 25 repainted the Corvette with paint, brushes, and a creative contemporary design. Mixtures of patterns were applied to the car with a DJ in the background playing music, while the team only had 45 minutes to finish. This art project really showcases what Detroit is known for; art, business, and technology all merged into one.

101514_5bEd Welburn, the GM vice president of Global Design said it best when he said, ““Creativity is the basis of everything in life, from fine arts to innovation, from design to manufacturing.” Welburn, an honorary chairman of the MOCAD gala said, “What better way to demonstrate inspiration and creativity than by having these young GM designers, who helped create the new Corvette Stingray, transform it into an art car during this event.”

The fundraiser generated almost $400,000, but more importantly it could encourage creativity in young people and can lead them to look for those creative outlets. “There is a lot of creative energy in the city and helping our youth harness it early is essential to a vibrant Detroit and museum,” said MOCAD Executive Director Elysia Borowy-Reeder. “In the past year, MOCAD’s Teen Council, workshops, teacher K-12 advisory group, and student docent programs have made contemporary art and design accessible to nearly 12,000 youth.”

What do you think of the new paint scheme on this rolling piece of art? If you came across the opportunity to own this car, would you keep it the way it sits now or would you remove the vinyl wrapping?
