GM Releases Gen V LT1 Videos, Showing Inner Details

Building a brand new engine is no small matter, especially when the engine is slated for your premier car, like the Chevrolet Corvette. This morning GM revealed to the world its all-new 6.2 liter engine with a classic name – the Gen V LT1. We’ve got a complete rundown of the specs, information, and improvements made to this new motor for all interested parties, as well as photos from the unveiling. However, if you just want to see this new engine at work, and watch it ride a wild engine roller coaster known as a “tilt engine stand,” then stay tuned and watch the above video.

The video comes from inside GM’s engine testing center, where the new 5th-generation small-block V8 is being developed to debut in the 2014 Corvette C7. These engines must undergo rigorous testing before the public is even allowed to know their existence, and part of that testing comes from an intense trip on the tilt engine stand.

While a normal engine stand is fine for tuning or dynoing, the tilt engine stand simulates what an engine will undergo on the race track. By throwing the engine around on the tilt engine stand, GM engineers can better understand how to keep the oil flowing and the engine humming along. Without such testing, who knows what might happen out on the track?

It’s pretty cool watching this motor tilt to and fro in the name of science. But that isn’t the only video GM has released along with information on the new Gen V small-block V8. The other videos include an animation video that explains different features of the new LT-1 engine, including active fuel management, direct injection, and those fancy-looking pistons.

Another video shows the whole engine coming together, piece by moving piece, reinforcing the notion that this new Gen V V8 engine has little in common with the outgoing LS-series of engines. Active fuel management even has its own dedicated video, which is apparently a very important part of GM’s new small-block V8. This system closes the valves to four of the eight cylinders under a light load, which will reportedly allow the new Corvette to deliver around 26 MPG on the highway.

There is even a video of the new LT-1 engine on a dynomometer, presumably to get its horsepower and torque numbers settled. GM has only said that the new LT-1 engine will make “at least” 450 horsepower and 450 ft-lbs of torque. Unfortunately, this new video doesn’t have the best audio quality, and we doubt it is the best representation of what the new Gen V engine will actually sound like.

If you are as excited as we are about this all-new GM engine, then you are going to want to make sure you check out all of these videos. It is an exciting day to be a Corvette fan, and we can almost picture the aftermarket tuners drooling over the many new features of this all-new engine. The potential for performance seems to have been built in every step of the way, and we can’t wait to see how this engine performs in the new C7 Corvette.
