[1]It’s hard to believe, but the new Camaro has been with us for almost six years already. It first debuted in 2006 at the Detroit Auto Show as the Camaro Concept, though the first production Camaros did not roll off of the assembly line until the spring of 2009 as 2010 models. So really, the (new) Camaro is only approaching is third consecutive year of production, but you can be sure that GM is already hard at work on the next-gen model.
GM Inside News [2] reports that the next-gen Camaro has shown up in the GM product system as a 2016 model, meaning it should begin production sometime in 2015, conflicting with reports that it would debut as a 2014 model [3].
Rumors for the next-generation Camaro have run the gamut from practical to impossible. One of the most persistent rumors is that the base Camaro will receive a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, most likely the 270 horsepower 2.0 liter turbo that will debut in the Cadillac ATS [4] in January. Will Camaro buyers be attracted to a turbo four-banger?
Other rumors include the development of a twin-turbo V6 [5], as well as a next-gen 6.2 liter V8 engine. Weight reduction is sure to be a high priority [6], but what we really want to know is… what will it look like? GM hit a home run with the current Camaro’s design, and we hope they aren’t tempted to return to the retro look that is already so played out.
