Racing Fun For All: The 2017 NMCA Season Preview

The NMCA has been helping to push door car racing to new levels each year by providing some of the best racing you will see. Their efforts to give racers the best program and facilities to race at makes for amazing competition on the track, and gives fans an awesome experience. For 2017, the NMCA is keeping things rolling with the introduction of new classes, additional shootouts, and the best doorslammer racing in the United States.

As a racing organization, the NMCA prides itself on having classes that allow a racer at any level to come experience a national event. Their classes cover everything from the wild Xtreme Pro Mods, to the backbone of drag racing, bracket racers. Over the years the NMCA has also made great additions like Radial Wars, a class that gives the racers of these three-second monsters a place to compete for a true championship. Besides all the on-track action in 2017, the NMCA will have their amazing vendor midway, swap meet, and car shows at each event.

With the new season, comes new opportunities for racers who normally don’t race each other to get a chance to face off. Two of the biggest and most competitive classes in the NMCA are Nostalgia Muscle Car and Nostalgia Super Stock. Both of these eliminators feature classic Detroit iron squaring off using an index format. You never really get to see these talented drivers race each other on the track to see who is king of the classics, until now.

The racing in both of these classes is super tight, and according to ProMedia’s Steve Baur it’s only natural to let these two classes duke it out. “Following a similar program where we pitted Open Comp racers from both the NMCA and NMRA against each other in an 8-car showdown at the Atlanta event last year, ProMedia decided to put together a similar showdown for the season opener which will feature ATI Nostalgia Super Stock racers running against our Detroit Truetrac Nostalgia Muscle Car racers. It’s muscle car mayhem at its best.”

The top four in points from 2016 in each class that is present at the Bradenton event will be in the field automatically. The rest of the spots will be filled out for each class by a random drawing. The racers will work off an NHRA Sportsman Ladder to see who brings home the Muscle Car Mayhem Cup and $750 in cash.

A huge addition to the NMCA’s lineup this season will be the Stock/Super Stock Combo class. “Feeling the time was right, the ProMedia staff introduces its new Stock/Super Stock combo class for 2017. This project was spearheaded by ProMedia’s Racing Operations Director, Gene Bergstrom internally. The idea has been well received by hundreds of interested Stock and Super Stock racers,” Baur explains.

This new class will be a part of the six race NMCA schedule where racers can earn contingency cash, and have the opportunity to win a Nitto Tire Diamond Tree Ring. The Stock/Super Stock class will be a handicapped break-out eliminator that uses all the current NHRA and IHRA classes. The NMCA plans to develop indexes for the class combinations that will be used in 2017.

It’s apparent from the NMCA’s official press release they are going to make the Stock. Super Stock Combo class a great experience for the racers. “We’re excited to add a new class to the NMCA championship series,” said Rollie Miller, NMCA General Manager. “We’re glad that we can provide the Stock and Super Stock racers with a quality event in which to race and also give them a decent shot at the Aerospace Components Winner’s Circle and Series Championship!”

For 2017 the NMCA’s Pro Stock class will go from being an exhibition only class, to a full on championship category. The buzz for this exciting new twist on naturally aspirated racing has been growing steadily since it’s announcement. Last year during the Pro Stock Class introduction, cars were running in the low seven-second range and even tickled the six-second zone. Now, teams are going to be putting their full efforts behind the class with a chance to win an NMCA title. You can read more about this all-motor, gear-banging class and what it brings to the table right here.

The NMCA’s crate motor class, Chevrolet Performance Stock, has been one of the most highly competitive in the series. Racers are fighting for every hundredth they can extract from the car while having to be a sniper on the tree. This mini Pro Stock class is getting its own exciting changes for 2017.

“The Chevrolet Performance Stock class presented by Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center continues to evolve. There were rev-limit and weight changes introduced in 2016 that made things interesting, and for 2017, the rules have been opened up to allow select manual transmissions. This is something long sought after by current racers as well as other racers that were looking to run the class, but only want to drive a stick,” Baur says.

By adding the stick cars into the mix will raise the car count, bring more action to the racing, and change the dynamic of how this class fares against the Coyote Stock class. “This change should make it a gear-bangers ball in Atlanta where ProMedia will once again feature the Sealed Stock Cup, which pits the Chevrolet Performance Stock racers against the NMRA’s Coyote Stock racers in a heads up, Chevy vs Ford matchup,” Baur explains.

Another thing to look for in 2017 is how the NMCA will fare at the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing. This event pits the best in the NMRA against the best in the NMCA in combined classes and bracket-style racing. Baur ponders the same question so many others are asking: “Last year was the first Super Bowl win for the NMCA in some time. Will they be able to make it back to back wins in 2017?”

The NMCA has set the table for a great year of racing in 2017. They have added some truly exciting classes to their roster, expanded their inter-class shootouts, and modified other classes to bring even more racers to the fold. You will be able to catch all this amazing racing in person at one of the six NMCA 2017 tour stops, or you can watch live on SpeedVideo.com as every round of racing is broadcast.
