Rumor: 6th Generation Camaro to Debut in 2014

[1]

It seems like just yesterday that General Motors, after weathering a storm of withering criticism and a very public bankruptcy proceeding, finally released the new Camaro to waiting fans. Many of these die-hard Bowtie enthusiasts had been waiting since the early 2000’s for the new Camaro to hit dealership floors, and the reborn pony car became an instant hit, winning over new customers and fans in a way that seemed to surprise even GM.

But as great of a car as the new Camaro is, GM knows that they can’t rest on their laurels, and work on the 6th generation of Camaros is well underway. Automotive News [2] reports that the next generation of Camaros will hit showrooms in mid-to-late 2014 as a 2015 model. Gentlemen, get your wallets ready.

The report lays out a few “facts” most of us are already well aware of. The next Camaro will share the under-development Alpha platform with the upcoming Cadillac ATS [3], which is supposed to be smaller, lighter, and more versatile than the current Zeta platform. While rumors speak of development troubles [4], we’ve got to believe that GM has been paying attention to what the critics have to say of the Camaro – mostly that it is a great car, undone by too much extra weight.

According to the rumor, the next Camaro will hit showrooms in either the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2014 as a 2015 model, right around the same time the next-generation Mustang is slated to hit Ford dealerships. There are plenty of rumors regarding what sorts of engines the next generation of Camaros will come with, but you can certainly bank on a wide variety of options. There will definitely be room for a V8, but expect GM to offer up a more potent selection of four and six-cylinder engines for Americans feeling the squeeze from high gas prices. 2014 seems like a long ways away, but we’re sure it will be well worth the wait.
