SoCal Chevrolet SS Club Reminds Us Why We’ll Miss The SS

The Chevrolet SS has been in production since 2014, but 2017 is the last year they will be built as GM/Holden vehicle production in Australia will end after 2017. Plenty of cars at the show were red, white, black, gray and silver, but this one was the only example finished in Jungle Green. Certainly an acquired taste, you have to give credit to GM for offering this color in the first place.

A few weeks ago, the SoCal Chevy SS Club held its fall meet at Glendora Chevrolet in the city of Glendora, California about 40 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. We happened to come across the club and its show announcement on our Facebook feed one day, and decided to make the trip from our Burbank office tower to check out the show.

Jumping into our SS sister car, the Pontiac G8 GT, we were really looking forward to attending the show which was closely focused on one of GM’s greatest—and currently only—LS-powered four-door cars. We figured it was going to be a super cool show and we were not disappointed.

As the club’s Facebook page outlines, its shows have been steadily increasing in size. They started with just five cars at the first show. This latest get-together saw more than 50 cars in attendance, which included two other G8s in addition to ours and a few late-model Pontiac GTOs as well.

Tiana Web’s Slipstream Blue SS sports a Comp/FAST LSXR intake, headers, nitrous and bunch of other cool stuff. On drag radials, it has gone 10.95 at 125 mph. We’ll call it super impressive getting a 4,000-plus-pound car in the 10s with basic bolt-ons and some sticky tires. It’s also a testament to how awesome the SS is right out of the box.

You will want to check out the extensive photo gallery we included here as well as a quick video we shot that also provides a cool overview of the cars on the Glendora Chevrolet grounds that day.

Some of the cars worth noting included some unusual colors like one example in what we believe is 2015-only Alchemy Purple and another in rarely seen Jungle Green. Other cars in attendance included several from all over the region that came from Northern California and Las Vegas. The long-distance award went to Bill Holden (same spelling as Holden in Australia) who drove his white SS all the way from Virginia.

Drop the ride height, add some super cool wheels and tires and an SS looks as good as or better than any BMW or Benz, right? Yup, we think so.

Several modified cars were also in attendance including some with superchargers and a very nice blue one owned by Tiana Web that, when the nitrous is armed, runs in the 10s at 125 mph.

All in all, it was a very cool show and future dates can be looked up on the club’s Facebook page. You can bet we’ll probably be there again to check out all the great iterations of Chevy’s modern-classic LS3-powered, high-performance sedan.

Before there was the SS for 2014, there was the Pontiac G8 GT in 2008 and 2009. Only three of them were at the SS meet, including our Liquid Red ’08 and another red one shown in the photo gallery. This Magnetic Gray G8 was a particularly pristine example of what many consider to be the best Pontiac of all.
