The 50th Anniversary Camaro Will Be Available This Summer

Although the Ford Mustang and some clever marketing invented the Pony Car segment in 1964, it’s safe to say the Camaro is on par with the Mustang in terms of cultural popularity and relevance. It really is the only other car alongside the Mustang that clearly defines the segment.

With the Mustang having marked its 50th Anniversary just about two years ago, it’s now the Camaro’s turn and Chevrolet has turned out a very nice package to signify the milestone in the form of the 50th Anniversary edition pictured here.

And even though there was a seven-year (2003-2009) hiatus in Camaro production, it was still September 26, 1966 when the Camaro was introduced, so mark your calendars as September 26 of this fall will be the official day that the Camaro has been a part of the automotive landscape for a full 50 years. It will be an important day to mark a 50th like June 30th, 2003 was for the Corvette and April 17th, 2014 was for the Mustang.

While Chevrolet calls it the “most epic Camaro yet,” we’ll say it might not be exactly that, but it will surely be something worth a look if you’re considering a 6th-gen purchase. The 50th trim package will be available in both coupe and convertible models with either V-6 (2LT) or LT1 V-8 (2SS) power.

Cool wheels that mention the 50th will be standard equipment on all V-6 and V-8 anniversary-package-equipped cars.

Bits and pieces specific to the 50th cars will include Nightfall Gray metallic paint and unique 20-inch Anniversary wheels with quite cool center caps that say “celebrating 50 years of Camaro.” Convertible models will have a black top. V-6-powered 2LT cars will also include an RS appearance package.

Unique paint colors and specialized wheels are solid mainstays of anniversary packages, but there is more to it here when it comes to one of the more important cars for many enthusiasts. This includes a specific 50th-Anniversary stripe package, exterior badges, and a unique grille with satin chrome accents. There is also a body-color front splitter, orange brake calipers (front only on 2LT V-6 cars) and a unique black leather interior with suede inserts and orange accent stitching. Also inside will be distinct 50th-Anniversary treatments on the instrument panel, seatbacks, steering wheel, and illuminated sill plates.

All in all, it’s going to be a great way to mark the 50th for the The General’s iconic sporty two-door; especially in 2SS, LT1-powered guise. When the 2017s become available, you’ll be able to build and price your 50th Camaro here.
