Video: Cadillac Challenge Series Round 2 – Chuckwalla Raceway

The Cadillac Challenge Series presented by Toyo Tires and the D3 Group, was recently back in action for Round Two of the all-Cadillac series, held at the newly opened Chuckwalla Valley Raceway near Desert Center, California. With a total of 17 corners packed into a 2.68 mile circuit, Chuckwalla is a very fast and very technical track that proved to be quite a test for drivers from all three classes. As you’ll remember from our news item on Round One of the Cadillac Challenge Series, the cars are divided into three classes based on the level of modification, and the event is operated in a Time-Attack style, with the fastest lap determining the winner.

In the C1 Showroom Stock Class, Steve Collins, who won the class in Round One, managed to squeak out a second victory in his 2012 CTS-V, turning in a fastest lap of 2:14.262. But Collins didn’t win without a fight. Nipping at Collins’ heels was driver David Little, who’s fastest lap was a 2:14.303, meaning that Collins won by only 0.041-seconds.

The contest for the C2 Modified Class was much tighter at Chuckwalla, due mostly to the fact that each of the entrants made the decision to step up to Toyo R888 tires. However, in the end it was more of the same with Alan Cohen from CTSVRACING.com running a winning time of 2:11.45, and once again just barely beating out Karim T. However, Karim didn’t go down without a fight and sent a wake-up call to the entire C2 Class by running a blazing 2:10 lap in the optional 4th Session that he wasn’t able to back up. The message is clear; C2 is a class to keep a close eye on.

There were a few changes in the C3 Unlimited Modified Class for round two, as D3 decided to move up a class from C2 with their CTS-V dubbed “The Legionnaire”, with their target aimed right at the winners of Round One, Team HeaVyweight. D3 got right to work, and their first lap off the trailer the Legionnaire Cadi cracked off a 2:10 lap with James Gill behind the wheel. However, Team HeaVyweight was able to make the necessary adjustments to keep up with D3 throughout the session, and in the end Bob Michaels pushed past Gill and the Legionnaire with a best lap of 2:08.109 for the win.

The Cadillac Challenge Series is just getting warmed up, with nine events left to go throughout 2012. The Cadis are only getting faster, and some stiff rivalries are starting to flesh themselves out. Be sure to check out the re-cap video from Round 2 here, and be on the lookout for Round 3 of the Cadillac Challenge Series when they hit the track at the Vegas Invitational held in conjunction with MFest on April 21st at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
