Video: Camaro SS And ZL1 Rev Battle Is Music To Our Ears

The Chevrolet Camaro has always been a legendary car known for producing classic raw American power, and with that power, comes raw sound.

To us, the $20,000+ price difference between the SS and the ZL1 is pretty much completely justified by the ZL1’s 640 horsepower supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that is sitting under the hood–not to mention its Magnetic Ride Control suspension. But, the SS is a great option for those with a tighter budget and still pushes a whopping 455 horses– not bad at all for a $35,000 car. And to be completely honest, we would gladly take either one.

These extremely similar looking rear-ends can be easily differentiated by their oddly placed badging and custom license plates.

Even though they’re sporting different engines under the hood, these two sound extremely similar–not surprising since both motor share the same architecture with some minor differences. And that’s not a bad thing– at all. Both actually come with a selectable-mode exhaust, giving the SS’s engine the ability to sound as good as the LT4’s… well, almost as good. So, in addition to being top-of-the-line street and track performers, both of these babies sound pretty darn good.

Based on the video, the ZL1 seems a little louder and definitely has more of a rasp to it, giving it a little more of a raw sound that most LT fans can appreciate. But, the SS might sound just as good. If we were to make a decision solely based on exhaust note, the ZL1 is the clear winner but, to us, it’s definitely not a deal-breaker type of situation.

So, performance aside, which exhaust sound do you prefer– the ZL1’s or the SS’?
