This video from the webcast show “Ignition” features their track test of everyone’s favorite new Camaro; the ZL1. We get to ride shotgun in the ZL1 as Carlos Lago, Associate Road Test Editor for Ignition, runs the ZL1 through its paces at Indy Motorsports Ranch, in Wilcox, Arizona.
With the traction control set on mode number 4, Lago launches the car at 4,000 RPM, and rows through the gears turning in a 0-60 time “in the low 4’s” and a 12.1 second quarter mile time at 117.4 miles per hour. Lago also takes the time to show us “the fastest way” to launch the ZL1, which is to turn off the traction control, launch at just over 2,000 RPM, and feed up the clutch, and pedal on the throttle just a bit depending on how much tire spin you see coming out of the hole. Lago reports in the video that using this method he was able to get the ZL1’s 0-60 down to a corrected time of 3.8 seconds, and a quarter mile time of “under 12.”
Lago and Ignition also tested the ZL1’s braking and handling capabilities. First was the 60-0 braking test where the big Brembos were able to haul the 4000 plus pound ZL1 down from 60 MPH in just 108 feet. Next, was the skid-pad where Lago was able to match Chevrolet’s claim that the ZL1 can pull 1.00 G.
Then, Ignition handed over the keys to the ZL1 to professional race car driver and hot-shoe ringer Randy Pobst for a few hot laps around the track at Indy Motorsports Ranch. Pobst was rather impressed with the ZL1 saying, “[The ZL1’S] got that MR [magnetic ride] system, and it’s doing a great job. The car is extremely stable, even though it has good steering accuracy at the same time. Along with the braking, that’s powerful and consistent… it would be a winner.”
