We recently ran into a very special Mazda B2000 (or should we say B4800?) at LS Fest West. In case you missed the coverage, give this a read. Just to summarize, the little Mazda has been stuffed with a twin turbo 4.8-liter LS that is currently pumping out roughly 700 rear-wheel horsepower on just 15 pounds of boost according to Jeff Kay, the truck’s owner. Which, as it turns out, is more than enough to fry the rear tires right off it when they paid a visit to Hoonigan’s headquarters just a few weeks ago.
Hoonigan has become the defecto burnout headquarter for virtually any combination within striking distance of Southern California lately. Luckily for us, Kay lives just an hour away and wanted to show off what the little truck had.
This truck was a real head turner at LS Fest West and it seems like the guys at Hoonigan agree. They invited the guys over to show up and show out at their headquarters. The truck started life with a 2.0-liter engine, which is probably off being used as a paperweight somewhere. Kay tells us that the original idea for the truck was to stuff a 408 stroker motor in it and crank it up—a plan that he swears is still in the works.
The little 4.8 is being fed E85 from dual Walbro 450lph pumps housed in a Radium surge tank, and a flex fuel system using an 0411 computer handles the rest. Two snails from Turbonetics provides all the boost and the mill has been optimized via worked 317 heads, an LS9 cam, and ARP bolts and studs throughout.
As you can see in the video, the little truck is capable of burning off the tires at will and even goes head to head with a 1,000 rwhp CTS-V in something the Hoonigan guys call a “space race.” Spoiler alert: it wins.
Stay tuned for a full feature on Kay’s badass little Mazda.
