Will the Chevrolet SS Get A Supercharged LSA? Signs Point To Yes

The 2016 Chevrolet SS sedan features several exterior enhancements that reinforce its commanding presence on the road. A revised front fascia features new, vertical ducts at the outer edges to direct airflow over the front wheel openings to improve aerodynamic efficiency. The fascia also incorporates new LED signature lighting, while new, functional hood vents and new-design 19-inch cast-aluminum wheels contribute to a stronger appearance for the rear-drive sports sedan.

Rumors are swirling that the Chevrolet SS may receive a 580-horsepower, supercharged LSA for its final production year. Whether the swan song muscle sedan will have a unique moniker is still to be foreseen, but the possibility of the model actually coming to fruition seems more and more likely.

We previously reported that News Corp Australia had uncovered information that GM was green-lighting an LS9-powered Holden Commodore GTS-R. While that “confirmation” may or may not have been credible, due to the Australian-based news company never mentioning a source, we do know that the General has seen fit to re-patent the GTS-R name plate, lending credence to the supposedly substantiated claim. However, Holden plans to only build 100-200 examples of the last-ever Australian produced Commodore. It seems unlikely that GM would build an SS in such small numbers, but it is not outside the realm of possibility.

The already formidable SS roles off the same–soon to be shuttered–Elizabeth, Australia line as its Holden-badged brethren and is equipped with a 415-horsepower LS3 standard. This allows the Chevrolet to sprint to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds and is capable of putting down a quarter mile in just 12.9 seconds, which is pretty quick for a 4,000 pound family sedan.

The addition of a supercharged LS would catapult the SS to near CTS-V levels. The SS is available with large, vented Brembo brakes and Magnetic Ride Control suspension; fitting it with the LSA would be the last piece of the puzzle to move the four-door behemoth into world-beating performance territory.

It seems less than crazy to think that while GM is stuffing LS9s between the fenders of a few select Holdens that they might slip a few LSAs between the fenders of a couple SSs in the process as well. Although, it strikes us as vaguely odd that one model would use an LSA while the other utilized an LS9. The engine differentiation may not be outside the realm of possibility, but it certainly seems like the smarter decision would be to choose one or the other and just change the trim and what side the steering wheel is on (yes, we’re aware this is an over simplification).

Regardless of whether the SS receives the LSA or not, we will be sad to see it go, since the Holden manufacturing facility is closing its doors for good in 2017— although we are hopeful that GM will bring it back in the form of another rear wheel drive performance sedan based on the Alpha architecture, much like the current Cadillac CTS and ATS models. A smaller, more nimble Chevrolet-branded sports sedan could be more appealing to consumers and would possibly be exported to Australia for sale under the Holden name plate. A performance option could see it packing an LS (or more likely an LT) once again, but the likely motivator in that scenario would be of the turbo’d V6 variety.

This may be your last chance to get your hands on a piece of four-door V8 automotive history. And let’s put it this way, if you end up not being able to buy one from the factory, you can always slap a supercharger on it yourself and pretend that you did anyway.
