Saturday Notes:

LSX Shootout Qualifying Round 1:

Well, it took until just after midnight last night to get all the way through the initial round LSX Shootout qualifying, but we were in it for the long haul – to stay as long as it took to bring you all the results.

In LSX Drag Radial, the “come-back-kid” Steven Fereday managed to get his Trans Am back together after the fire he experienced in test and tune, and lay down a 7.76 at 193 MPH. But it was Andy Essary in his T/A that would churn out the quickest qualifying time in the class with a 7.53 at 189 MPH. The rest of the times for the class were pretty tight, and should make for some very interesting action in the next few rounds.

The big-cube beasties of the LSX All-Motor Class, produced a much wider spread in qualifying times. It was Joe Hunneycutt in his 444 cubic inch LSX equipped 2002 Camaro that would run the lowest ET at 8.56 at 156.9 MPH. Chris Fowler from Keller, Texas, qualified second in his 1990 Camaro running an 8.99 at 153 MPH, and points leader Judson Massingill struggled a bit, qualifying 5th after traction issues.

In the Holley EFI LSX Real Street class, points leader Paul Falcon qualified 4th, while his nearest competitor for the class championship, Adam Preston (behind by a mere 30 points), qualified first with a blistering 8.45 at 160 MPH. Jon Ebert in the Lingenfelter 5th Gen qualified 5th, with a very uncharacteristic 9.75 at 110.62 MPH.

The 5th Gen Camaro Class saw plenty of high and mid 10 second runs, with the top qualifier, Louie Filippides, in his 416 cubic inch LSX 2010 Camaro laying down a smoldering 9.5 at 148 MPH.

In the index-style LSX Rumble Class, there were 58 cars run down the track, with Greg Edwards qualifying at the top of the heap in his 2002 Camaro with the 396 LSX mill taking him to 8.69 at 162.9 MPH. Edwards nearest competition after qualifying was Nathan Echart in his LSX swapped Fox Body, running a 9.34 at 142.5 MPH.

Car Show Coverage

Not all the LSX action was on the track at the LSX Shootout. Today’s Car Show brought out an impressive pack of LSX powered rides, and we decided to snap some pics of our personal favorites from among the group.

A rather unique induction set up for a 5th gen, wouldn't you say?

Super clean Berger 4th Gen SS, just one of the many incredible 4th Gens we saw while crusing the LSX Shootout Car Show.

This LSX swapped beasie was on display in the show car area, but later in the day we watched it run a high 11 quarter mile.

[36]The first full season of the GM Performance Parts LSX Challenge race series comes to a close with the LSX Shootout at the Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, Indiana, and LSXMag will be bringing you same day coverage and videos all weekend long. The Shootout has proven in the past to be the biggest LSX drag racing event in the world, and this year’s race, as the culmination of a series championship chase for the first time, should be no exception.

Titles are up for grabs in three heads-up and two handicapped LS-only classes, and there are some extremely tight finishes in store. In JE Pistons LSX Drag Radial, just five points separate Michael Meeks and Mark Carlyle in their battle for first place, while Paul Falcon and Adam Preston are a mere 30 points apart in Holley EFI LSX Real Street.

Not only are the championships at stake this weekend – the Shootout is also where we’ve traditionally seen the top LS racers go for broke in search of bragging rights. We’ll go out on a limb and predict that records will fall, and by Sunday we will have seen the quickest and fastest LS runs in history for these cars.

[38]

Don’t forget that there’s a whole NMCA event running here this weekend too – for full coverage, check out our sister site StreetMuscleMag.com [39]. There will be periodic updates now through Sunday, so keep your browser pointed right here for all the fun and excitement!

Friday Notes:

We’re about an hour away from the start of first round qualifying action here at Indy, and we’ve already had some drama in test & tune. Drag Radial racer Steve Fereday was making a hit in his twin turbo Firebird when some kind of transmission plumbing came loose and a fireball erupted.

[40]

[41]

Steve Fereday talks with us about his close call:

We’re happy to report that Fereday got the car stopped and climbed out under his own power, apparently uninjured, and Mark Carlysle in the far lane was long gone and uninvolved.

[42]

Remember that cool video [43] we showed you guys with Lingenfelters new 1,000 horsepower flat plane turbo LSX? Well here it is resting between the fenders of Lingenfelter's new white drag car. We were lucky enough to see the car make an very impressive 8.6 second run during test and tune.

...and here's the result: 8.6 at 161 MPH. This was the same run featured above, in Jon Ebert's parachute cam video.
