SEMA 2014: Wavetrac Differentials Put Power to the Ground

IMG_0251Horsepower and traction work hand-in-hand. Without each other they are utterly useless – especially so in a racing environment. Wavetrac Differentials offers a line of traction-aiding products that help aim the power to the tire with the most grip, drastically improving off-the-line acceleration and corner-out acceleration.

While their goal is the same as any traction device, Wavetrac’s differentials don’t quite fall into any of the common mechanical categories.

IMG_0254“We have a cam device in the center which is a patented thing that nobody else has,” said Dana Clark of Wavetrac. “It overcomes the shortcoming of gear differentials in the sense gear differentials normally have to have some type of load on each axle for them to function. If you encounter a situation where one wheel gets really light or is up in the air or is bouncing there is no drive to the other wheel at all.”

Putting power to the wheels as efficiently and quickly as possible is paramount to achieving a fast lap time. Smoke-billowing slides can be fun and make awesome man-cave photos but they are a far-cry from the fastest way to get around a road course.

“This device [the Wavetrac] can generate a load internally so it will continue to bias torque to the wheel on the ground even if one is up in the air so you get more constant power delivery per lap” said Clark. “Just about every vehicle will have zero-axle load at some point and that translates to no power down on a normal gear diff. It doesn’t lock and stop the one from spinning but it still gives you power to the other side.”

Wavetrac’s product line extends throughout domestic, european and Japanese vehicles. For a full list of applications, visit Wavetrac’s website.
