The end of the ICE age is near, and that’s terrible news for Chevy pony car fans. Not only have we heard rumblings about the demise of the sixth-gen Camaro, but the harrowing news that it might transform into a Mustang Mach E-like CUV.
With the onset of the Covid-19 drama and associated supply chain issues, we watched as Camaro sales withered on the vine and all advertising and updates from Chevrolet melted away like the Wicked Witch Of The West.
Not a rosy picture but here’s the good news, GM Authority reported that Camaro sales have crept upward as the constraints on manufacturing have eased up.
In the United States, Chevrolet Camaro deliveries totaled 7,922 units in Q3 2022, an increase of about 52 percent compared to 5,203 units sold in Q3 2021. So far this year, Camaro sales have increased and rebounded 27 percent to 19,177 units. Sadly, this hasn’t helped the Camaro climb out of third place in the pony car wars.
According to GM Authority, “Chevy Camaro sales during the third quarter of 2022 kept the Bow Tie’s muscle car in third place. However, the performance during the quarter represents the model’s best quarterly result so far this year while also coming close to topping its best segment share. The Dodge Challenger remained in first place since last quarter, with a 17 percent increase in sales to 16,412 units. The Ford Mustang remained in second with a 14 percent bump to 10,354 units, while the Camaro posted a 52 percent jump to 7,922 units.”
If we read between the lines, here’s what’s really going on in the pony car segment. Cheap financing and women buyers are fueling these stats. Stellantis will finance anyone with a credit score above room temperature, and that’s why you see V6 Challengers on every corner. The current Camaro has really turned off women buyers who are intimidated by the gunshot, chopped-top greenhouse that got even worse after the 5th generation. The Mustang gives them better visibility and the same sports car vibe.
Visibility be damned, the 6th Generation Camaro is the best performance coupe on the market today and before the ICE age slips over into oblivion, get yours now or forever hold your peace.
