The buzz around the forthcoming Chevy Camaro ZL1, slated to be the baddest Camaro thus far, is continuing to grow with every day. Now, Chevy is giving us a look at the ZL1 ripping around their Milford proving grounds in this video they recently posted to their YouTube Channel.
In the video, Chevy’s “Department 180” is performing a 24-hour track test on the new Camaro ZL1 at the Milford Proving grounds, and gives us an overview of the Performance Traction Management System that will be featured on the car. Aaron Link, Ride Handling Development Engineer for the Camaro ZL1 says, “Here at Department 180, we verify the quality of our vehicles through extreme measures. This very challenging Milford road course lends itself well to Performance Traction Management tuning. The biggest element that challenges the car here is the elevation change – it was purposely designed to never have the car be at a steady state.”
The 24-hour test performed on the ZL1 consisted of 4 hours of track time at a stretch at Milford over the course of 6 days, with each track session being 40 minutes long, for a grand total of 36 hard driven track sessions put on the ZL1. Link explains, “The ZL1 is the most sophisticated Camaro ever. The 24 hour test that we are currently performing on the Camaro ZL1 is our most extreme level of track validation.” The test is designed to insure that the new Maximum Camaro can handle anything you track stars with a heavy right foot can throw at it.
Alex McDonald, chassis controls development engineer, tells more about the Performance Traction Management System (PTM) on the ZL1: “It is an extension of the traction control, the stability control, and the ABS systems. We’ve taken the hardware that is in the car, and we’ve added software that is specific for the race track.” The PTM features five modes; Wet, Dry, Sport 1, Sport 2, and Race.
One of the more interesting things about this video is that you will notice the ZR1 tearing around the track is in camo, all the way until the very last shot of it coming down the track. Could this be GM giving us a peek at the production model?
