Video: Drifter Joon Maeng And Vortech Hit The Dyno At Duttweiler

Kenny Duttweiler of Duttweiler Performance is a legend in the world of forced-induction engines; his creations have set records and kicked ass all over the globe. Professional drifter Joon Maeng normally runs in the Formula DRIFT series with a sweet supercharged LS7 that runs one of Vortech‘s V-7 YSi superchargers out front – but his plans for 2015 are quite different.

“The Lucas Oil Mav TV Protect The Harvest S13 won’t be competing in the Formula Drift Pro Championship this season. It’ll be running in the History Channel TV show called Shotgun with ten episodes – and other fun gigs with MAV TV. We are in the process of building a new car for this season. It’s confidential for now,” says Maeng.

In his quest for consistency to keep the engine alive for all ten episodes of Shotgun, Maeng enlisted the assistance of not only Duttweiler, but also Holley EFI‘s Ricky Best and the entire Vortech crew in his quest to make power numbers that will keep the tail end of his 240SX sliding all season long.

At only 19 psi boost pressure, the LS7 pumped out 1,135 hp and 920 lb-ft torque – stout numbers for sure.

Maeng enlisted Duttweiler Performance last year to provide him with a bulletproof combination, and has been very happy with the experience.

“We are after not just horsepower but reliable horsepower,” says Maeng. “My goal is to have this engine survive the whole season.”

The engine is based around an RHS block filled with JE pistons and Crower crankshaft and connecting rods, and is topped off with Brodix cylinder heads and a Holley intake manifold. Engine management is handled by a Holley EFI system tuned by Duttweiler.

A nice bonus at the end of the video is the opportunity to hear the engine perform in a simulated drag race, one of the advantages of using Duttweiler’s dyno cell. It rips through the gears with an angry snarl – we have to wonder how this bad boy would perform on the straightline track. Maeng even mentioned the potential for drag racing with the car later in the season, although he freely admits that it will need some changes in order to perform up to potential in that racing format.
