Video: How Flowmaster Laminar Flow Technlogy Works

All exhaust technology is not created equally, and for over 30 years Flowmaster has been proving it. Their laminar flow technology is quite different from the chambered muffler design that the company is famous for, and we found a video put together by the company explaining just how it works.

The laminar flow technology works via the use of two opposing conical shaped structures inside the muffler. This technology creates at deep powerful sound, however it maintains lower decibel levels, allowing owners to enjoy the rumble without disturbing the peace -too much.

This design still uses noise canceling technology that Flowmaster is known for, by using the shapes within the muffler to reflect and cancel sound waves as they pass through it. Exhaust gasses traveling through the muffler are accelerated into the laminar flow area. In the laminar flow area, a controlled pattern is established in the exhaust gasses that smooths the exhaust gasses and reduces it’s turbulence.

We all know that an engine in it’s most basic terms is an air pump. Moving more air and fuel you can move through it the more power it makes. The exit cone side of the muffler accelerates the exhaust gasses again. This gives the muffler a scavenging effect which helps improve vehicle performance.

Cool shell technology also helps this muffler retain heat inside the muffler case, leading to higher thermal efficiency. This also means that the exterior of the muffler is cooler, meaning it can be placed in tighter spaces without the worry of excessive heat damaging nearby components or finishes.

We could ramble on all day about all the benefits of this technology, or we could just tell you to watch the cool video that Flowmaster has on this technology. Laminar flow technology is available on three Flowmaster muffler models, the HP-2, DBX, and Pro Series mufflers.
