Video: Turbocharged 4.8L Swapped Nissan Runs 9.18, Looking For 8’s

Phillip Jurgensen’s 1993 Nissan may not be what some folks would consider eye candy, but the low-key 240SX certainly is no slouch. Pop the hood on this budget-built coupe, and you will find this is not your average everyday import, but rather is packing some good old American muscle in the form of a turbocharged 4.8L, which recently propelled the Nissan  to a new best, stopping the timers at an effortless run of 9.18 at 146 mph.

Jurgensen’s set-up is fairly uncomplicated and was assembled to not only be quick but to keep one of his main priorities in mind, which was being friendly to his wallet. With the exception of his eBay-bought GT45 turbo and custom turbo kit, which was fabricated by DeMartino Fabrication, the rest of his build is an array of stock parts. The 4.8L sports a stock LS1 intake, heads, and truck manifolds, and a stock LS6 cam.

Behind his set-up, Phillip has a TH400 trans, which was a recent upgrade, after much contemplation, from a T56 that he started the year off with.

Tuner Daniel Goodrich, whom was enlisted by Phillip to assist in the building and tuning of the car, says fuel system upgrades are on the table for the coming year, but for now the 240 is run on E85. “I can’t afford race gas,” chuckles Jurgensen. The Nissan is fed with a  single in-tank Walbro 485 pump and 80# injectors.

Keeping to his budget friendly build, Jurgensen jokingly admits, “I traded a gun for my wheels, and a set of injectors for my Mickey Thompson slicks.”

Both Jurgensen and Goodrich have further hopes for the car. Goodrich shares, “I feel like the car should go some consistent 8.80s with the current gear change and rear end upgrades since its 9.18 pass. After that point, a larger turbo and fuel system upgrades will have to be done, which are in the works and should be on the car for next season.”

Jurgensen’s ultimate goal with the car is to see mid 8’s and take the 4.8L stock bottom end record.

Currently the car is undergoing a Q45 swap, which will be completed before the car sees the dragstrip again. On tap for next season, the car will see a few more upgrades, including a Billet 76mm turbo. “And a parachute,” Jurgensen adds.

Watch as Phillip Jurgensen’s 1993 Nissan 240SX easily lays down a current personal best of 9.18 at 146 mph.
