PRI 2019: AFR Introduces Budget Friendly Aftermarket LS Heads

If you want to get more power out of an engine, you need to get air in and out of that engine efficiently. While the LS head does a good job in factory form, they are not ideal for every engine build. Up until now, cylinder-head options have been pretty limited. You could either run a factory casting or shed out a lot of cash in favor of an aftermarket set. While aftermarket aluminum cylinder heads are rather expensive, they can open the door for big power with the LS platform.

Air Flow Research (AFR) is about to bridge the gap between stock heads and the costly aftermarket units with the release of a new LS cylinder head. The innovative product is designed for the LS enthusiast that is looking for a better set of cylinder heads but doesn’t have the budget for some of the other heads on the market. The AFR cathedral-port 210cc heads come fully assembled and are perfect for anyone doing a high-performance LS-swap.

We talked to Tim Torrecarion, director of marketing & sales of Air Flow Research, about some of the advantages of the new head. Tim says, “The heads are produced from a permanent-mold casting. This type of casting results in a very consistent and robust product versus sand molding — which has a lot of core shift. The permanent-mold casting allows all of the ports to be true to the design, and even though it’s an as-cast surface, you won’t lose as much from the original design.”

While we don’t have all of the flow numbers and specifications just yet, we will soon. Expect to see more information on these heads toward the end of January with a price tag around the $1,000 mark.
