That’s A Wrap: Using DEI’s Exhaust Wrap Calculator

Some car parts are hard to purchase. It’s not because these items are not available or hard to find, it’s because you don’t know what you need. A few examples of this problem include camshafts, fuel injectors, and gears sets. If you need a cam, you can call the manufacturer and talk to the experts. For fuel injectors and gears, you can find online calculators to help you find the best option. If you need to know how much exhaust wrap to buy for your car, that is an entirely different problem, well, until now.

Design Engineering Inc. (DEI) has come up with a crafty tool they call the exhaust wrap calculator. Up until recently, purchasing the correct amount of wrap for your car was a guessing game. Things like exhaust pipe length, diameter, and even wrap overlap play a big part in the amount of material needed. And if you have ever wrapped a set of headers and came up short, you know how frustrating this process can be. While buying extra material is an easy fix, it can also get expensive pretty quickly.

The exhaust wrap calculator is a simple solution for a frustrating problem. While it’s not an exact measurement due to bends in the pipe, it will get you really close to the lengths you need. To use this tool that’s located on DEI’s website, you just need the following information, pipe O.D. (overal diameter), length of pipe in feet, wrap width, and wrap overlap. The overlap is the amount of material that will cover itself to keep from exposing the pipe. After you have all of the data entered, the calculator shows you the estimated length needed in the grey box.

We are running a 3-inch dual exhaust system in our vehicle, so we enter 3 for the pipe O.D. size. We measured the pipes and added up all of the different figures. We were betting that a 100-feet of wrap would be more than enough to meet our needs. However, after we entered the data in the calculator, we were surprised to see that we needed 118.73-feet. So instead of purchasing a single 100-foot roll, we also added another 25-foot unit to our shopping car on DEI’s website.
