Recalls suck for many reasons, like the sheer annoyance of taking your car into the dealership with the additional benefit of being stuck there for hours or ending up with imported 4-cylinder rental death trap. Regardless of the inconvenience, it is a necessary evil. According to Jalopnik, General Motors is going to recall nearly 40,000 Pontiac G8’s due to potential issue with the front passenger airbag module. Recently the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found evidence that the front passenger airbag module is in a grey area when it comes to compliance with federal mandates. With 38,400 of the 2008 and 2009 G8’s involved in the recall, dealerships will certainly be a little busier. Luckily there have not been any injuries reported due to the claimed module defect.

According to the NHTSA the airbag modules may not be in compliance with the federal standards for protecting vehicle occupants in terms of head injuries. Essentially, the modules in question may present a delay in deploying the airbag during a collision or crash. Despite the recall, the sensors are not faulty or sub par, they simply need to be reprogrammed in order to be compliant with the federal standards. GM is reportedly going to change the sensing and diagnostic controls for the front passenger airbag, which should eliminate any potential lag in deployment.
