Weld Racing introduced their 20-inch RT-S71 wheel in March of this year for a variety of applications. Recently a Z06 owner posted pictures of his new 17-inch RT-S wheels, which actually cleared the massive brakes found on the C6 Corvettes, but what makes the new size exciting is that it’s a perfect match for 5th gen Camaro owners looking to stay with the same wheel diameter as stock.
The new RT-S71 20-inch wheels range offer a variety widths starting at 5 all the way to 17.5 inches leaving the door open for a variety vehicles to take advantage of the benefits of new wheels. According to a Weld Racing press release, the new wheels are available with three different choices of clearance to fit a wide array of brake sizes and styles.
Weld uses primary forging grade aluminum, which means that recycled metal is not used like in many other cast wheels. By using forging grade materials the strength and quality of the wheels surpasses the competition; it is possible to determine the difference in quality from visual observation alone. For example the standard A-356 aluminum used in cast wheels is only 60% as strong, as the 5000 or 6000 series aluminum alloys used to create the RT-S71 wheels. These wheels have been tested to withstand 1200-horsepower and 1.2 second 60 ft times while still be able to handle high speeds. Once a certain threshold is crossed having a forged wheel that is notoriously true, strong and durable is a cheap insurance policy.
