This is the most driven 1966 Cadillac in the world.
Those are the words Josh Carpenter proudly spoke to me when I kicked off the conversation about featuring this awesome 1966 Cadillac Deville, officially known as “Gold Digger.” That instantly put a smile on my face since, after all, that’s what this hobby is all about: enjoying the cars we love. Few people have the opportunity to enjoy vintage metal to the level that Josh enjoys this Cadillac, and that’s all made possible by the glory of modern LS power.
Sure, I know a bagged 1966 Cadillac, as sweet as it is, isn’t typically what we feature here on LSX. But it’s very much on point when it comes to the meaning of this brand: the celebration of modern GM power and how that power allows enthusiasts to enjoy their builds. Cars, trucks, Camaros, Corvettes, Pontiacs, Cadillacs, GMCs… Maybe even a Buick or two. If it’s fast and/or cool, you can find it here.

Born Into It
Josh’s story is not an uncommon tale to those of us who have spent the better part of a lifetime in this hobby. His parents have always been car enthusiasts, and he spent his youth helping them build all kinds of cool projects. When he first appeared on my radar, he had bikes, the world’s fastest Dodge Neon, and this rad old Caddy cruiser that I photographed in front of a local music joint. That car must’ve set the stage for the future, since he now owns no less than three Cadillacs and presides over the Monroe, North Carolina chapter of the massive Cadillac Kings Car Club.
Speaking of Monroe, that’s where the story of the Gold Digger Cadillac begins. Well, not Monroe, North Carolina, but Monroe, Georgia. Josh was participating in the official automotive enthusiast pastime of perusing Facebook Marketplace when he spotted an ad for a gold 1966 Deville. So, he headed from Monroe to, well, Monroe and met up with an older gentleman who claimed the car was mostly original. While the A/C didn’t work, there were some transmission issues, and the clearcoat was peeling, the Deville was indeed a super solid, lightly restored 1966 post sedan. If you’re a Cadillac aficionado, you know that 1966 post Devilles are much more exclusive than their hardtop counterparts. Even better, as hinted by its respray, this Deville was confirmed to be a factory gold car.


Hit The Road
When he purchased Gold Digger, Josh was content with fixing the car’s transmission and cruising it as-is. In fact, much of this Cadillac still retains its assembly line prestige: a fully functional and well-preserved driver from an era when style truly mattered. However, after going through two V8s, he settled on what some would call a drastic change. The new plan was to LS swap the Gold Digger to increase reliability, cruisability, and the ability to fix the car virtually anywhere. See, this is a car that has been driven cross-country multiple times. An LS swap would make it much easier to pull into a shop and source whatever components were necessary to get back out on the road–the most important aspect of living this lifestyle.
Enter The LS
Josh eventually found a police impound Tahoe that he could steal the drivetrain out of. The new engine would be GM’s venerable 5.3L LS, and he’d also transplant the truck’s 4L60 4-speed transmission.
Believe it or not, there is an aftermarket company that specializes in LS swapping old school Cadillacs. But then, I guess that isn’t really a surprise since these days, people are LS swapping almost everything. Devious Customs out of Riverside, California, makes a full LS swap kit for the 1966 Cadillac Deville. Both convenient and easy, the kit is designed to swap any LS engine. The bundle includes headers, hardware, an adjustable shift linkage, motor mounts that are contoured to the car’s chassis, a new oil pan that’s complete with a new pickup and dipstick, and even a transmission crossmember that works with airbags.
Josh said the swap took him and his friends a couple of afternoons. Naturally, he rebuilt the 4L60, which also requires mild transmission tunnel modification to fit. That gearbox twists a custom driveshaft that, in addition to being extended two inches, is actually smaller in diameter than the factory unit. Fueling is handled by a custom tank, which is commanded by a modern drive-by-wire system that’s hooked to a modified factory accelerator pedal. Finally, a large compressor was installed at the front of the block to feed all the air ride equipment that’s stashed in a tiny percentage of the car’s monstrous trunk.
In addition to being a regular feature at virtually every show and meet-up around the Charlotte region, the Gold Digger Cadillac has been to 15 states. The car has completed numerous trips from North Carolina to Florida and recently completed a 75-hour, 6,000-mile trip from North Carolina to California and back. Josh has even dropped into the Cadillac Kings National Picnic in Las Vegas, where he’s received two hubcap awards for the longest distance traveled by any participant. This year, Josh is planning to take Gold Digger across the entirety of historic Route 66 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of America’s Mother Road. He also has future trips planned to Vegas to round out his hubcap collection.

All About Adventure
Gold Digger is proof that an LS swap isn’t just about horsepower numbers or dyno sheets. Sometimes it’s about freedom. It’s about taking a massive, vintage Cadillac that was never designed to rack up modern road miles and turning it into a machine that can cross the country without hesitation. That’s exactly what the LS platform does best. For many, it replaces the fear of breaking down with the confidence to just keep driving.


In many ways, that’s the entire spirit of LSX Magazine. The engine under the hood might be modern, but what it enables is something timeless: people enjoying their cars. Whether that means drag racing a Camaro, autocrossing a Corvette, hauling parts in a squarebody truck, or road-tripping a bagged ’66 Cadillac. Josh didn’t build this Cadillac to sit under lights or spend its life on a trailer. He built it to live the way classic cars were originally meant to: out on the road, racking up miles and making memories.
Fifteen states and thousands of miles later, Gold Digger has already proven its point. It’s not just a cool LS-swapped cruiser, it’s a passport to adventure.
