750hp Mercury-Powered SB4 Camaro Street Tested

There are high-end car builds that look amazing under the lights, and then there are cars that are built to be brutally effective on the road. This 1967 SB4 Camaro, built by Roadster Shop for their repeat customer, Scott Rosenbach, proves that you can absolutely have both.

This particular car, an older build from the shop, was recently back for some routine maintenance, giving Roadster Shop’s media guy, Elia, a chance to get behind the wheel.

This Camaro has a history of being used as intended. Elia noted, “It’s been out in the wild getting driven hard, no velvet ropes, no car bubble, just driven properly.”

That hard driving is made possible by an early version of Roadster Shop’s Spec chassis. Even after years of use on road tours, Elia was impressed with the car’s handling.

“It feels so inspiring, so flat, so direct,” he said during a spirited drive. He added: “It doesn’t feel like an old ’60s muscle car; it feels like a modern car, a modern sports car.”

The source of the car’s incredible sound and power is what makes it truly special. Elia described the engine as “one of the most exotic American engines ever made.

It’s a Mercury Racing SB4, a 7.0-liter, dual overhead cam V8 based on the LS architecture. This engine produces 750 horsepower and has an incredible 8,000 rpm redline.

Regarding the motor of the car, Elia mentioned that “sadly, it was short-lived because this motor is now discontinued… which honestly makes it even more special.”

The exotic V8 is also paired with a reliable T-56 manual transmission, creating what Elia called a “beautiful relationship between motor and trans.”

The rest of the car is just as thoughtfully put together. The exterior is finished in a Surf Blue Pearl Coat with tucked bumpers and Forgeline wheels.

The interior is all business, with Recaro Expert seats, Sparco harnesses, Dakota Digital gauges, and a paint-matched half-cage.

This SB4 Camaro is a perfect example of what can be achieved when a high-revving, exotic engine is matched with a capable modern chassis.

It’s a driver-focused machine that proves a classic muscle car can be transformed into a street-legal rocket, ready for any road you throw at it.
