Billet Bling: Howards Cams’ Billet LS Reluctor Wheels

What does a well-made watch and a billet reluctor wheel have in common? They’re both designed to provide the most accurate time reading possible, but one of them is worn on your wrist, while the other lives on the back of your crankshaft. Howards Cams billet LS reluctor wheel is a precise part designed for high-horsepower LS engines.

A reluctor wheel, also known as a tone ring or tone wheel, has a series of teeth on its outside edge that are read by the crank position sensor for ignition timing purposes. Depending on the LS engine, the wheel will have either 24 or 58 teeth. The OEM wheel is a two-piece design that’s made of stamped steel, so it’s not as strong as a billet wheel.

Since a billet reluctor wheel is a precision CNC machined part, it will be more accurate and will give better timing consistency over an OEM wheel since there’s less wheel deflection. This is very important in a high horsepower application where an accurate timing reading is a necessity so the engine will perform its best and not have any tuning issues.

Brian Adix from Howards Cams talks about why the company wanted to release these billet reluctor wheels for LS engines.

“In a high-performance LS engine, having precisely timed ignition will help prevent engine failures and improve performance. Our wheels are available in 24 and 58 tooth sizes so all LS engines are covered. These wheels have been precision machined and use a one-piece designed to complement our LS Reaper crankshafts. Our billet reluctor wheels provide great accuracy, reliability, and there’s less of a chance of the reluctor wheel slipping on the crank.”
