Chevrolet has been, and will continue to, drop subtle teasers regarding the ZL1‘s performance testing. Al Oppenheiser, the Camaro chief engineer, spoke at the Camaro Factory Fest and gave us some details about the upcoming 2017 lineup.
The engineering team has built this vehicle around the goal of achieving the perfect balance of “performance, design, and technology,” Oppenheiser said. From what we have heard so far, we think they have achieved a pretty good combination.
On top of the subtle 50th-anniversary accents added to the already attractive design, this car has definitely proved itself from a performance aspect. The ZL1 houses a supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 and makes an astounding 650 horsepower. “[The vehicle] goes to the limit for the track, the strip, and the street,” Oppenheiser said. It includes a performance data recorder system, customizable launch control, and an electronic-controlled limited slip differential (LSD); features that combine to allow the driver to adjust the rev limit when launching and burning out. Did we mention the car now comes with line lock? Because it does.
And while you might prefer to row your own gears, Ford and GM’s recently jointly-developed 10-speed automatic transmission is far from unsatisfactory, shifting faster than a PDK or any dual-clutch tranmission. Oppenheiser expressed his preference for the automatic transmission and explained how it proved itself with a factory 11.4-second quarter mile time. Rocketing from 0 to 60 mph in only 3.5 seconds.
The ZL1 will have a staggered release and the manual transmission option will be released before the automatic. The manual transmission did not disappoint either, as it is expected to have a 0 to 60 time below 4 seconds– relatively close to the automatic’s time. Oppenheiser proudly announced, unlike many supercars, you can reach 60 mph in first gear, which is quite the accomplishment. This completely cuts the shift time out of any 0 to 60 blast.
Theres no doubt this is a monumental time in history for GM and we can’t wait to see what else is coming with the ZL1.
