There is no doubt that it’s an incredibly exciting time for Corvette enthusiasts. The 2018 model year is sure to bring some innovation and changes, but we are still unsure what changes are coming. But, Chevy is back at it again, giving us even more to wonder about.
CorvetteBlogger.com says the world-famous Chevrolet Bowling Green Assembly Plant will be shutting down production after the close of the 2017 Corvette model year. The official announcement from the plant is coming soon, but it is rumored that the shut-down will begin in the month of June and will last for roughly three months, until September 2017.
Why, you ask? Well, the one million square foot Bowling Green factory is going to be thoroughly upgraded and, immediately following completion of this enormous project, the 2018 Corvette model year will kick off with the continuation of the C7. But, ultimately, the upgrades are widely expected to be geared toward benefiting the 700+ horsepower ZR1. Then, supposedly, at the end of the 2018 model year, the long awaited mid-engined C8 will finally come into the picture.
Could one of these be coming soon from Bowling Green?
This news doesn’t come as a surprise to us, as last June, General Motors’ announced a $290 million dollar investment to the plant and its whopping $439 million paint shop is nearing completion. As per GM, the huge investment was said to “upgrade and modify the plant’s vehicle assembly operations with new technologies and processes.”
We don’t know exactly why Bowling Green needs these upgrades, but we do know it means Chevy has something good in the works.
