Could This Be the 1LE Camaro We’ve Seen Tested Before?

The Chevrolet Camaro is all about performance. Heck, even in its modern V6 digs, the model boasts 323hp, power numbers associated only with V8s 15 years ago. But just like with anything, there is always improvements that can be made to the performance of the car and Chevrolet has worked hard to deliver the very best for their muscle car fans with the introduction of the 1LE package for 2013 Camaro SS models. Back in March, we told you about this welcome addition to the Camaro lineup but hadn’t seen a living, breathing version of the car out in public. That has since changed, however, as our friends over at Camaro5.com spotted a brand new 1LE Camaro at last weekend’s Detroit races and posted plenty of pictures as proof.

While the recently released fifth-generation COPO Camaro is meant to be a drag racing beast, the 1LE Camaro is meant to be a road racing beast. Introduced as a road race and performance handling package upgrade to the 1SS and 2SS Camaro models, the 1LE Camaros come with an upgraded Tremec TR6060-MM6 manual transmission, 3.91 final-drive ratio, air-to-liquid cooling system, monotube rear dampers, larger stabilizer bars in the front and rear, a front strut tower brace, higher capacity rear axle shafts and ZL1 wheels.

As you can tell from the pictures, spotting one of these special Camaros isn’t difficult, with all 1LE models sporting a matte black hood, rear spoiler and front splitter. Inside you’ll find the flat-bottom, race-inspired steering wheel and short throw shifter from the ZL1.

Now, I know what you’re thinking-the 1LE model hasn’t been released yet, nor have the 2013 models. While this is true, the car that Camaro5.com members found looks to be the 1LE that Hot Rod Magazine took a look at back in April. Not only does it have the same front fender stripe-delete from the original concept car images released, it also sports a license plate from the same state as the test car, good ‘ole Michigan.

The 1LE package definitely makes the Camaro even more of a looker and who can complain about the added performance? If you’re into road racing or canyon carving and in the market for a new Camaro, the 1LE package is definitely worth taking a look. We can’t wait to see curve-crazy enthusiasts thrashing on the new model later this fall when the 2013 is released.
