This past Sunday was a very good day for the Cadillac Racing Team, as they managed to post a their second consecutive twin-podium finish at the 31-lap Round 3 of the Pirelli World Challenge Race, held in Long Beach, California. Driver Andy Pilgrim handily won the race by leading 22 of the 31 laps in his CTS-V, while Cadillac teammate, Johnny O’Connell came in third place behind Volvo’s Randy Pobst.
As top qualifier, Pobst led the first 8 laps of the race with both Pilgrim and O’Connell’s CTS-Vs nipping at his heels. On the 9th lap, Pobst made one small mistake and Pilgrim didn’t miss his chance to capitalize. “Randy [Pobst] got stuck in traffic on the hairpin, and I think I surprised him a little bit. I had been studying him for the first several laps, and it seemed like he was backing up his braking point a bit. I noticed that, and I waited as late as I possibly could, the door was open and it went through.” Pilgrim tells reporters from GM.com.
From there, Pilgrim took control of the race and never looked back. Amazingly, the entire race was caution-free, allowing Pilgrim to put plenty of distance between his’ CTS-V and the rest of the pack, and in the end Pilgrim crossed the finish line a solid 6 seconds ahead of Pobst and his Volvo. O’Connell came in just over 10 seconds behind Pobst, grabbing the second straight twin-podium finish for Cadillac Racing.
Cadillac is currently in the lead for the Manufacturer’s Race with 25 points, while O’Connell leads in driver points, with Pilgrim a close second thanks to his win at Long Beach. If you’d like to watch the action for yourself, Round 3 of the Pirelli World Challenge Race will be broadcast on NBC Sports on April 29th, starting at 3:00 PM EDT.
