Say what you will about the performance, or even the looks of convertibles – but you’ve got to admit, there really is something to the old cliché about the feeling of the wind blowing through your hair with the top down. Chevrolet tries to capture a glimpse of that unique feeling in this latest Camaro Convertible commercial from GM, titled “Escape”, we recently came across on YouTube.
The video opens on restless waves being pushed into the shoreline, and far in the distance we can see a coastal highway. The music begins to intensify as we see shots of the Camaro driving through a dark tunnel. A quick shot of the rear view mirror reveals that the car is being followed, and the car speeds up towards the light at the end of the tunnel, as if it’s trying to flee from something. The music stops abruptly, as the camera focuses in on a single shot of a woman’s long hair gently blowing in the wind, and as the Camaro blasts through the opening of the tunnel onto the coastal highway, and the sudden thumping of the intense music lets us know this car means business.
The announcer comes on, and speaks just eight very simple, but meaningful words – “The wind can run, but it can’t hide.” And to end the video, Chevrolet reminds us that after a long absence, the Camaro Convertible is back, and ready to chase down some wind to blow through that hair of yours. Or, scalp, as the case may be…
