If you’ve been to the track lately, or even just driven down the street, you’ve probably noticed that the number of “rich kids” with brand new cars running around is ridiculous. Whether their rich by default or just handed things because their parents “wanted to give them everything they never had,” these kids are being handed the keys of new cars from a very young age. So what is the car of choice for these spoiled individuals? Thanks to Jalopnik, we take a look at one car we’ve all grown to love that is ending up in the hands of more and more spoon-fed drivers – the fifth-generation Camaro.
This week, Jalopnik asked their readers which cars would make the top ten list of ultimate rich kid cars. Their readers responded and ranked the new Camaro #9 on the list. Also on the list was the Ford Mustang, Dodge Viper, McLaren Mercedes SLR, Subaru Impreza and, coming in at number one, the Lamborghini Gallardo.
With the Camaro’s muscle car stance, powerful engine and good looks, it is no wonder that they are sought after by the younger crowd. It is a shame, however, that more kids are just being handed the keys to these modern muscle machines rather than having to work for them.
Even more frustrating than the rich kid phenomenon itself is the trouble this trend seems to mean for the cars the kids receive. While we’re sure some are decent drivers, we don’t know many teens that are capable of handling a brand new Camaro, let alone take care of one as well as an older, self-made individual would. That means more new Camaros in fender-benders, wrapped around telephone poles or thrashed to the point of uselessness than any of us would like to fathom.
As much as we’d like it to, the trend of providing your young kid a new sports car doesn’t seem to be changing. So where does that leave us? I guess all we can do is shake our heads at these individuals at lights and take pride in blowing them out of the water on the drag strip with cars that were actually worked for.
