Now that the 2013 Formula DRIFT season has officially started, it’s time to get to know some of the drivers and their cars. While there are certainly many brands, from import to domestic, represented in the field this year, it is the two fifth-generation Camaros that we’ll be rooting for all season long. So let’s take a look at what they have to offer.
The first Camaro in the Formula D field this year is the 2011 SS driven by Tyler McQuarrie for his own race team, started in 2012. This bad little muscle car is complete with some of the industry’s finest performance products, from a COPO LS7 engine and Eibach suspension to Wilwood brakes, Forgestar F14 wheels and Hankook RS-3 tires.
The powerful Camaro is capable of producing 750 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque while taking the corners of any of the 2013 Formula D courses by storm – an intriguing perspective for McQuarrie’s major sponsors like GoPro, Mobil 1, Hankook and Holley Performance.
On Saturday April 13th, we caught up with McQuarrie at Formula DRIFT’s opening event at Long Beach. There, McQuarrie, who qualified 32nd, went against noted Formula D driver Daijiro Yoshihara in the first round, losing to the high-ranking driver. Yoshihara ended up winning the event last weekend.
The other Camaro that will be competing in the 2013 Formula DRIFT season is Conrad Grunewald’s new performance machine. While many of the car’s specifications have yet to be revealed, we do know that the car makes use of a brand new COPO LS7 engine and Megan Racing coilovers.
Unfortunately, Grunewald’s new setup proved to have some issues during practice and qualifying when the clutch wouldn’t engage and when later on, the car ran out of gas, losing 8 gallons from the paddock to the track due to a mysterious leak. Grunewald was unable to make his first qualifying round and unable to drift in his second qualifying round at Long Beach, causing him to sit on the sidelines during Saturday’s competition.
Formula DRIFT is off to another amazing season and we can’t wait to see what the year brings for our favorite Camaro drivers. Chances are there will be a few surprises along the way, as there’s word of another Camaro joining McQuarrie’s team for select events, piloted by JR Hildebrand. Maybe we’ll see it next month at Road Atlanta.
