The GM Lansing Plant is where the Cadillac ATS and CTS are currently assembled, and will be the home of the next generation of Camaro as well.

Many Chevy fans have been calling for a slightly smaller, lighter weight, and more nimble Camaro seemingly since the initial release of the 5th Gen, and GM seems to be listening. Back in December GM announced that production of the 6th Gen Camaro would be moved from Oshawa, Ontario to the Lansing River Assembly Plant, in Lansing, Michigan to be built alongside the Cadillac ATS – a sure sign that the new Camaro would share the ATS’s lighter and smaller Alpha rear-wheel-drive Platform.

Now we are receiving news from Michigan that GM has approached the Lansing City Council looking for tax incentives to begin a $38 million expansion to the plant. In 2011 and 2012 Lansing received a $190 million expansion and created 600 jobs to begin building the ATS, and it seems likely that this smaller expansion would be to add production capabilities specific to the new Camaro.

According to the Detroit News this expansion would add at least 150 new jobs, and construction on the expansion could begin as early as July and would be wrapped up before the end of 2014. So far, that time frame seems to fit perfectly with the expected arrival of the 6th Gen Camaro as a 2015 model.
