The latest Cadillac ATS promotional article from GM focuses on the engineering that has gone into creating the sport coupe’s distinctly refined performance sound with each of its three available engines. The “noise and vibration” engineering team went to great lengths to make sure that the ATS sounds like a performance car when you mash the gas, and like a quiet and refined luxury sedan the rest of the time. They’ve even gone as far as developing a Bose sound system that monitors the in-cabin noise level, and will emit a noise canceling signal to reduce unwanted sound.
Since the Bose system will be damping out all the unwanted noises, the engineers can get away with using less sound deadening material, which will in turn keep the new ATS’s curb weight down around an estimated 3,400 pounds.
Now that’s what we’re talking about GM. Well done…
The go-to topic for anyone looking to bash the 5th Gen Camaro is how much it weighs, and how most of its 430 horsepower gets eaten up by simply getting its 4,000 pound body rolling from a dead stop. Even the most diehard 5th Gen fan is forced to concede that the bashers do have a somewhat valid point. Now, if it’s true that the ATS will share its newly designed platform with the 6th Gen Camaro, you can bet that it will be lighter as well. Couple that with the recent talk about the forthcoming Gen V Chevy Small Block, and how it’s slated to be a “leaner and meaner” V8 with less cubes but more power, it seems that the next Camaro could be taking shape as we speak. Far less curb weight and smaller but more efficient V8 – sounds good to us.
