When you start looking at clutch options for your car, it can get pretty tricky. Questions like, “What stage clutch should you select? What materials are the best for my application? How will the new clutch feel?” all come into play when selecting the correct unit for your application. In the above video, Phastek gives us an insightful showing us why they chose the SPEC Stage 3 Clutch for their 2010 Camaro SS.
The Stage 3 Spec clutch is about the middle of the road when it comes to holding power and grip. A Stage 1 unit would act as an OEM clutch in the way the clutch feels. This clutch features a molded carbon kevlar-based, with a high-performance organic lining that offers smooth engagement and long life. While this unit is perfect for the street, it is also suitable for some mild racing applications since it is rated at 550 lb-ft of torque.
For the Phastech Camaro, the guys need something with more holding capacity due to their plans with an aftermarket cam and a nitrous system. While a 100 horsepower shot of nitrous seems pretty mild these days, we have seen this jetting combination make 200 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. Since the car is already rated at 455 lb-ft of torque from the factory, the guys should be well over that mark with a cam, and it’s a safe bet the torque numbers will be in the 600-700 range. With that said, you are going to need a clutch with some firm holding power but still light enough in feel to go from stoplight to stoplight effortlessly.
Here is a look at SPEC's Stage 1 clutch on the left and its Stage 3 clutch on the right.
The SPEC Stage 3 clutch is the perfect option for the SS because it’s designed for the street, drag racing, drifting, and autocross use. The unit features a carbon semi-metallic material for excellent holding power. According to SPEC, “This unit is designed for street and race cars that require an aggressive but streetable engagement and high torque capacity. The hub comes in either Sprung or Rigid and is application dependant. The double sprung hud features spring cover relieves for flexibility, and both hubs use heat treated components for strength and durability.” To top it off the Stage 3 is rated at 809 lb-ft of torque, making it perfect for the Camaro.
