Should GM build right hand drive versions of its North American models for overseas markets? It’s hard to believe that the question even merits discussion in the global, nano-second connected world we live in. GM is in fighting trim with its best product lineup in years, and as Automotive News reports, the company needs to remove all barriers to selling its cars overseas. Here’s the reasons why they need to get off their duff and get this done.
There are no legacy issues with emerging markets. In fact, in places like China, owning a Buick is considered very prestigious. No self respecting west coast yuppie would be caught dead in a Tri-Shield product – too much baggage of Vogue tires, Landau roofs, and Olympic trim packages. GM needs to pull out all stops to cater to these open-minded markets.
No more excuses about costs associated with tooling up for RHD. If anybody needs a refresher, GM jettisoned HALF is brands in 2008 bankruptcy, going from 8 nameplates to 4. They also pulled the rip cord on old assets and essentially wiped the slate clean as far debts go. Rumor has it they are sitting on 27 billion dollars. Cash. C’mon!
Last but not least, the product is AWESOME. Not just C7, Camaro,SS, new Cadillacs, etc. but Chevy has one hell of a small car quartet in Spark, Sonic, Cruze and Volt. This fearsome foursome is already on sale overseas, most with right hand drive, but guys, pull out all the stops and go man go!
In all fairness GM has been selling RHD Opels, Vauxhauls and Holdens (may the brand rest in peace) for years. But to move North American iron, no more excuses. Maybe new CEO Mary Barra will get on this ASAP. I wonder how she will address why GM has been AWOL at the Tokyo Auto Show for the last three years and why GM has 33 outlets in Japan when other brands (like BMW) have 180…

The ATS is the right size for Japan. The outgoing model had RHD, but the new model doesn’t. Sneaky window tinting masks LHD. Mary Barra, help! Photo via GM Japan
