The rumors regarding GM trying once again to import an Australian-based sports sedan into America have never been hotter. All signs point to this new sedan being called the Chevy SS or SS Performance, and it will almost certainly be based on the Holden Commodore. The Commodore already underpins the for-cops-only Caprice PPV, and the evidence of the Commodore coming back to America is all but undeniable at this point.
The latest proof to come our way is a grainy-but-important spy shot from sharp-eyed a Carguides.au reader. This camera phone picture seems to show a left-hand drive Commodore VF testing in the land down under.
The LHD Commodore VF was caught in heavy camouflage with a convoy of other future Holden products, among them the Colorado 7 SUV and Opel Astra GTC. But we’re most interested in the LHD Commodore, which just adds fuel to the speculative fire that GM is bringing the Commodore to the U.S. for sale en masse.
Among the other evidence is a leak via OnStar and GM’s own hints about a new vehicle replacing the Impala in NASCAR. Then again, we first heard these rumors years ago, and the presence of Caprice PPV’s in many cop fleets across the country only made it seem more and more likely. Does this latest spy picture seal the deal?
