We’ve all thought about it, and a few of us have even had the balls to try and outrun the police. But if you’ve ever watched “Cops” or “Worlds Scariest Police Chases,” then you already know that 9 times out of 10, the chase doesn’t end in the criminal’s favor.
We guess Joshua Curtis, of Wheatfield, Indiana, isn’t a fan of either show though, as he foolishly tried to outpace the police in his (supposedly) 600 horsepower Camaro. After he crashed the aforementioned car into a utility pole, this ballsy Camaro owner then went on to brag about how he reached speeds of 160 MPH reports the Sun Times. Great idea there, chief.
What began as a simple traffic stop when officers clocked Curtis’s Camaro going 53 MPH in a 35 zone soon became a high speed chase. The pursuing cop, Officer Paul Czupryn, wrote in his report that as soon as he activated his sirens “I heard the Camaro’s engine downshift and rapidly begin to accelerate.”
The Camaro continued to pull away even as the police cruiser hit 100, perhaps lending some credence to the claims of 160 MPH. The pursuit started in Porter County, and did not come to an end until Curtis crashed the Camaro into a utility pole at an intersection.
Amazingly, neither the 25 year-old speeder nor his 24 year-old wife were seriously injured. As he was being taken into custody, Curtis reportedly bragged to the arresting officers that he had hit speeds as high as 160 MPH.
So why did Curtis run, besides to avoid a minor speeding infraction? Turns out he had allegedly had some pot in his car, was driving with a suspended license and had manufactured false registration stickers for his license plates.
He was booked on quite a few charges, including resisting arrest with a vehicle (a felony) and misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, in addition to a speeding ticket. It’s likely he probably would have gone to jail even if he had pulled over, but at least he would still have his “600 horsepower” Camaro. Oh well. At least it makes a good prison story, right?
