Everyone remembers that iconic black and gold Pontiac made memorable in the big-screen hit “Smokey and the Bandit.” With that screamin’ chicken on the hood and a 6.6-liter V8 just below it, the star car became an instant sensation. Sales of Pontiac’s performance car skyrocketed after the movie and reports claim that sales were so good that GM held off the third-generation variant for a year to “make hay” under the current sales boom.
A Fitting Tribute
Enjoying a resurgence of viewership, the Smokey and the Bandit motif came back into vogue a few years ago with several variants focusing on a “what if” theme with the new fifth-generation Camaro. Several companies were creating Pontiac possibilities. One such company with a razor-sharp grasp of what made the original car so cool (besides the bride-stealing, Burt Reynolds-wielding, bridge-jumpin’ antics of the original) was the Trans Am Depot.
Each one of the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro Trans Am Bandit Edition cars is numbered. Additionally, Burt Reynolds himself was involved in the project and personally signed each one of the 77 cars produced. As if that wasn’t enough, this particular car, number 20 in the series, is currently owned by funny-man, Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias. Gabriel’s comedy style has made him popular among fans around the world. He is one of the most-watched comedians on YouTube (almost a BILLION views!) and is one of the few comedians to sell out Madison Square Garden in New York, Staples Center in Los Angeles, and Sydney Opera House in Australia.
Gabriel Iglesias is known for his car collection with a focus on the German Volkswagen, but this Bandit Trans Am Tribute car is also one of his prized possessions. Featuring the necessary black and gold hues, the car also features those oh-so-70s T-tops, just like the original. The interior is much more modern than what those in the 70s could ever imagine, with Katzkin seats in two-tone leather with Bandit logos throughout. There is a Kenwood sound system that includes navigation for those times when you just may be running decoy for a friend.
Building A Modern Bandit
Under that big bird on the bonnet is a modern 6.2-liter V8 hooked to a 6-speed transmission. There are also upgraded sway bars and a Hurst shifter. The dash of each vehicle in the series is signed by the Bandit himself and comes with the certification paperwork as well as the exclusive Bandit hat with case and gloves to seal the deal. The problem with having a vast collection of autos is realizing the limited seat time each coveted car can receive. As such, there are only 1,225 miles put on this beauty since it left the factory and aftermarket up-fitter.
All of that makes for an excellent package for its next owner, as the car is being offered by “Fluffy” himself at the upcoming Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas 2022 auction as Lot #758.1. The Las Vegas event runs from June 30 through July 2, 2022, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, West Hall, in Las Vegas, Nevada. One of the original 1977 Bandit Trans Am cars used by Burt himself sold for almost a half-million dollars a few years ago. While this star car may not have the same hammer price, it’ll be interesting to see what this tribute Trans Am brings as it crosses the block in a few weeks.
