TVR Engineering has been in the business of creating unique sports cars since their start in 1954. However, with the company’s breakup into several smaller companies in 2006, it has failed to produce anything recently, let alone anything worth hyping about. According to Autoblog, that is changing, however. With a new logo and website, the company is now offering a makeover plan of sorts for the existing TVR fleet that includes fitting the cars with a GM LS3 power plant.
Once known as the third largest specialized sports car creator in the world, TVR has been rather dormant since the company’s split into subsidiaries in 2006. But that hasn’t stopped the company from trying to reach new customers lately. Currently owned by Nikolai Smolenski, TVR is now offering to source customers used TVR vehicles that will be upgraded and overhauled to include new brakes, an updated dash, and above all else, a 6.2L LS3 engine. This means that you could have any TVR vehicle made with a GM powerplant under the hood. Mated to a 5-speed transmission, the remodeled TVRs will push around 430 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque (as you might imagine from an unmodified LS3)
While TVR is offering this deal for new customers, the company hasn’t forgotten about the existing TVR owners. For those individuals currently holding onto a TVR vehicle, the same upgrades and redesign will be available to them as well.
Although TVR has always been known for using “in-house” engines, we think the move to use an LS3 in their rehash of old models is a good one for the company. Not only will this bring modern performance to the original TVR vehicles, it will also appeal to buyers in other demographics.
Rumor has it that TVR will also be producing a new Tuscan 4 roadster soon. Unfortunately few details have been released about the car, so we’ll have to wait and see if TVR decides to use an LS3 to power it from the factory.
