Rumor Has It: Return Of The Z/28 Camaro For The Sixth-Gen?

Based entirely on speculation and an anonymous tip, Lethal Garage has made what seems to be an insane prediction. The prophecy is that General Motors will reignite the legendary Z/28 to its line up using the sixth-gen Camaro design as its platform.

Pictures surfaced of this Camaro a year ago that provided some interesting modifications that were supposedly never offered by Chevrolet. Could this be the next Z/28?

The rebirth of the Z/28 might sound ludicrous when you first think about it, but let’s look at some of the recent developments.

Styling
It’s no surprise that GM has its hands full with the current Camaro platform. The 2010 Camaro was a big hit after the previous generation disappeared from the lineup. Chevrolet was leading the charge with a fresh retro-remodel that offered styling cues from the iconic ’69 Camaro. Since its debut in 2010, Chevrolet has made several changes to the body of the Camaro that has left fans underwhelmed. The latest debacle was a frontend that had fans so triggered, it led to a redesign of the front fascia.

Sales Numbers
Sales for the Camaro in 2018 have been a bit dismal when compared to its competition — and the sales numbers in 2017. According to Motor1.com, in 2018, the Ford Mustang was the top-selling pony car, with 75,842 units sold. Dodge was second with the Challenger, selling 66,716 vehicles. In last place, the Chevrolet Camaro. GM sold 50,963 units — a 25-percent drop from 2017, which could be a direct result of the redesign that had Camaro lovers enraged.

Timing
Recently, we wrote an article, The Camaro Is Not Dead…Yet, that General Motors was putting the seventh–gen Camaro on hold for 2023. The set length of production for the sixth-gen Camaro is slated to be a seven-year production run, and GM has mentioned an update is coming in 2020. It’s evident the Camaro needs a significant boost in sales to keep the model alive, and this would be the perfect time to introduce the Z/28 model.

The Competition
Ford and Mopar appear to be all-in on the pony car war as both companies have announced wide-body versions for selected models. Plus, Ford just released pricing for the 2020 Ford Shelby GT500, which will be the most potent and advanced Mustang ever. It’s going to take something big for GM to take back market share with the Camaro, as well as a car that can compete with the GT500.

Our Opinion
We think the sixth-gen Camaro is the best pony car on the market. With that said, GM is going to need to do a couple of things to get back on track. The company needs to pay attention to its styling efforts and get feedback from customers before pulling the trigger on any changes. They absolutely cannot afford to make any more ill-willed styling changes that will hurt sales. Secondly, since we are in the middle of the sixth-gen production run, a new model to generate buzz and sales is out of the question. GM needs a home run, and another legendary Z/28 could do the trick.

Like most enthusiast, we don’t want to see the Camaro go to the wayside again. The eight-year Camaro hiatus was all we could take! Unfortunately, we will all have to sit and wait, in hopes new styling and the possibility of a new Z/28 can save the day for Camaro lovers everywhere.
