Shafiroff Racing’s New 745 Horsepower LS7 HHR Pump Gas Engine

When seeking out your next engine, it is vital to keep a personal reality check. Deciding between a street “friendly” or a high horsepower engine can be tricky. After all, finessing the last ounce out of every horsepower has become a way of life for most muscle car owners. Where high horsepower shines, typically, street manners begin to diminish. Shafiroff Racing has just the fix.

Bridge the Gap

Shafiroff Racing has bridged the gap with their newest Chevy LS7 HHR pump gas engine. The 427 cubic-inch motor packs a stout 745 horsepower at 6800 RPM. While other engines require exotic fuels and variable corn/fuel blends, Shafiroff Racing’s LS7 engine only requires a quick trip to the pump for some 92 or 93-octane fuel.

The Build

Building an engine that can handle these naturally aspirated horsepower numbers with a 10.95:1 compression ratio requires more than a mail-order catalog. Shafiroff Racing starts with a GM Performance LS7 aluminum block with six-bolt steel billet caps. A Lunati 4340 “Wet Sump” forged steel crank with a 58-tooth reluctor wheel resides in the block with Callies 4340 H-Beam rods protruding up the cylinders. Mahle 2618 forged aluminum pistons with coated skirts finish off the short block at the small end of the rods.

The top end of this engine is just as impressive as the short block. Custom Comp Cams hydraulic “Street Roller” camshafts nudge against the COPO style hi-rev hydraulic roller lifters. The lifters thrust the 3/8-inch chrome-moly pushrods towards LS7 rocker arms. A pair of Brodix BR7 LS7 aluminum heads shine bright perched atop the forged bottom end with PAC Racing springs with titanium retainers. A Rollmaster billet timing set keeps the engine running in unison. ARP high-performance head bolts hold the motor together while an Edelbrock Super Victor 4500 aluminum intake tops of the combination.

Verdict

Building a high-performance engine requires more than just a catalog of parts. Product knowledge, experience, and proper tooling are all a necessity for making a working engine. Turning it up a notch and making that engine into a natural aspirated, pump gas, horsepower king with a streetable powerband takes a lot more, or just a simple call to Shafiroff Racing! It’s your call…
