SPEC Clutches: For That Next Engine Swap Or OEM Upgrade

SPEC Clutches: For That Next Engine Swap Or OEM Upgrade

Let’s face it, if you’re reading this story, you’ve most likely never read “The World’s Most Complete Guide to Saving Gas (and Money). In fact, that is probably the first time you’ve put those words together in a complete sentence. So with that out of the way, we can now focus on the real reason we’re all here. We don’t just like cars; we like FAST cars. Currently, there are a plethora of high-performance choices to help satiate our appetite for power, but as the old saying goes, there’s always room for improvement. That holds especially true when talking about powerful cars with three pedals. SPEC clutches help ensure all the power makes it to the wheels.

When increasing performance, one item that should always be considered is the clutch required to contain all that tire-searing torque. The team at SPEC Clutches knows this fact very well. That is why they have made such an effort to provide solutions that work as an OEM upgrade and have multiple levels of holding capacity to fit highly modified vehicles and most engine swaps.

SPEC utilizes several different clutch materials to tailor the torque capacity and clamping characteristics of each clutch assembly. They can also combine various clutch discs, flywheels, and pressure plates to fit many non-OEM applications.

Choosing the right clutch from a list of part numbers depends on the usage the clutch will see. Will the car see only regular street driving or will it also be used on the racetrack? If racing is a primary concern, even the type of racing can dictate which clutch is best suited for your application. Being realistic with your expectations is key when choosing the proper clutch and all SPEC clutches are built to survive abuse when used within their specified torque ratings.

SPEC clutches

There are many kits available that make swapping an LS or LT engine a simple bolt-in project. When adding power to your ride, don’t forget to include the proper SPEC clutch for your application!

SPEC Clutches offer their line of high-performance clutch assemblies in various stages – seven to be exact – so you have a broad scope of options. Their Stage I clutch features an organic lining that offers both smooth engagement and excellent life. It is an excellent upgrade for any OEM application and can be used for street performance, occasional drag racing, and autocrossing.

Even if used in a non-factory application such as this LS-powered Delorean, SPEC can combine components to keep the power flowing to the wheels.

SPEC’s Stage II offering opens up more options to the enthusiast by using either a Kevlar disc with steel backing for its Stage II or a multi-friction disc in its Stage II-Plus package which adds another 15-20% higher torque capacity over the regular Stage II offering.

How about an LS-swapped Porsche 911 to get those purists riled up?

The SPEC Stage III line of clutches features a carbon, semi-metallic puck friction surface that is designed for street and race applications. They provide an aggressive but streetable engagement. There is also an additional Stage III-Plus option which features a full-faced, carbon semi-metallic clutch disc for unparalleled life, friction co-efficiency, and drivability.

SPEC’s Stage I through Stage III kits are considered street-friendly, but can still be used for many types of racing. Once you get into SPEC’s Stage IV series of clutch assemblies, you’re entering a realm of serious power potential! Featuring a Kevlar disc with a metallic backing, these clutches are designed to handle severe off-road antics such as road racing, drag racing, and drifting.

If you are in the market for one of SPEC’s Stage V clutch packages, you’ve pretty much exhausted all other options. This clutch is for SERIOUS power and features the highest possible friction coefficient available in a single disc clutch. Folks at SPEC consider this bad boy primarily a drag racing clutch. It features a full-metallic disc that can be described as street-drivable, but not street-friendly.

SPEC clutches

Even when choosing a puck-style clutch plate, SPEC offers numerous compounds, sizes, and numbers of friction pucks per plate.

SPEC also offers multi-disc clutches for a variety of applications, as well as billet flywheels, pressure plates, and hydraulic throwout bearings as upgrades and conversions. Their vast lineup of products and knowledge allows them to tailor a clutch assembly specifically to your application. Call them or check out their website to see all of their offerings for your application. You can use their drop-down menus to “SPEC Your Car” and locate the parts you desire. With the perfect SPEC clutch installed for your application, the clutch will be the last thing you’ll need to worry about when you put the pedal to the metal.
