Things can turn bad fast when it comes to street racing. That’s exactly what happened in Spokane, Washington last weekend when a street race involving a Subaru and a fourth-generation Camaro turned into a crash scene at the local middle school, according to NWCN.com. Although all parties are ok, the Camaro remains in shambles after it struck the side of the building.
According to Washington police, the street race occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on Friday night. When the Camaro lost control, it slammed into Garry Middle School, ejecting one person and partially ejecting the other. The Subaru’s driver fled the scene but was later tracked down to a house nearby and arrested for vehicular assault.
Upon hearing the crash, witnesses came out to help the injured driver and passenger until police arrived at the scene. Both people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. According to the KREM news report included with the NWCN.com article, both injured people lived and were released later from the hospital. Police are now trying to determine who the driver of the Camaro was in order to press charges.
Barbara Johnson, a neighbor to the middle school, told KREM that the area sees many accidents because drivers don’t always realize the road ends right near Garry Middle School, causing them to jump the curb or lose control when trying to turn at the last minute.
KXLY, another local TV station, reported that some of the football practices at Garry Middle School were cancelled on Saturday because there was debris from the accident still in the field, which was deemed too dangerous for people to be around. Damages to the middle school are estimated at only $200.
