This Super-Fast, Championship-Winning C4 Is Seeking A New Home

We recently came across this awesome, race-ready 1989 Chevrolet Corvette Track Car on Bringatrailer.com. A former National championship winner autocross car, this C4 features all the go-fast goodies that made it a contender back in the day. It has also been touched-up with enough DMV-approved bits to allow it limited highway miles, depending on how hard your state looks down its emissions-sniffing nose at vintage vehicles.

The heavy-breathing L98 engine has been updated with a much higher-winding Gen-II LT4 engine and features a built 700R4, automatic transmission. The car does have the beefier Dana 44 rear differential, and the seller offers a ZF transmission separate of the car’s sale, so we assume the car may have originally been a manual, but was converted for competition.

The LT4 engine found its way under that clamshell hood in the early 2000s and stands as a testament to pre-LS engine swaps.

The LT4 engine swap occurred around 2001-2002 with a custom tuned, 1993 LT1 ECU and speed density wiring harness completing the install. Other goodies include a performance torque convertor, Canton Racing oil pan, 52mm billet throttle body, SLP cold air intake, Hooker long-tube headers, and a 4” exhaust system with a single Flowmaster muffler. For those who may worry about such things, an Optispark ignition distributor and polished water pump were recently installed.

The chassis has been updated with bits from Vette Brakes & Products, as well as Penske remote reservoir shocks and 17″ CCW wheels wearing Hoosier slicks. While the fender flares, rear wing and wild paint may make you consider this car as simply a track star, the seller states, “When I purchased the car in 2012, I didn’t originally drive the car on the street. I decided in 2016, to tag the car. I had the headlight motors repaired and changed out some bulbs, wiper blades, etc so it would pass the Texas 25+ year-old vehicle inspection.”

So, depending on where you live, and how finely-tuned your local .gov’s noses are, you could conceivably put more miles on the odometer at a regular rate. For those who might simply want to use the car for the intended track time, the car’s history speaks for itself.

The car was modified in the early 2000s for racing in the B-Street Prepared (BSP) class in Sports Car Club of America autocross events. An accompanying logbook carries input on the car’s setup used when driver Rita Wilsey achieved the fastest time at the 2004 National Council of Corvette Clubs Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, and a BSP open-class win at the 2005 SCCA Solo National Championship in Topeka, Kansas.

According to the seller, the car is still quite capable. “It needs to go to a new home who will take it out more often to dodge cones, and even run it back to Solo Nationals” he says. “The car is set-up with the suspension pretty dialed in. It’s easy to auto-x fast out of the box, and definitely will put a smile on your face.”

No doubt it would! But if you’re thinking of owning this car, you’d better be just as fast as the car itself, since the auction only has about one day left. The car is offered without reserve and as of this writing, the bid amount barely covers just a portion of what the go-fast goodies would cost, not counting the car! Someone is going to win this fine example of what it took to get it done when the C4s ruled the roost at your local autocross. Check out the auction before it’s too late, and be sure to get your best bids in, as this one is sure to gain momentum as the clock ticks down.
