The Yellow Monster: Bob Williams’ 2006 NA 10.5 Z06 Corvette

Bob Williams, the owner of All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads, is in the business of building horsepower for racers in many different forms of motorsports and was in need of a way to push his development processes. To give him the ultimate level of control and have some fun along the way he commissioned a 2006 Z06 Corvette to be constructed for NMCA NA 10.5 racing action. His new test mule sings a beautiful horsepower song at 9,500 rpm each pass it makes down the track.

The Corvette project began three years ago and was a two-year build at PK Race and Rods. Williams decided the Z06 would be the best choice for his car since it already had many carbon fiber parts on it, along with an aluminum frame, which made creating the 6.50 certified chassis much easier for PK.

“We felt the Corvette was the most aerodynamic car to give us an advantage, and the wheelbase is an advantage, as well. The car still uses the stock body panels and we have a lot of weight in the car to move so we can make it work better on the track. PK did a great job building this car from start until finish. I told them I wanted something that was nice and would be easy to work on at the track — they did that and more with it. The car is great,” Williams says.

The Corvette is powered by a 419 cubic-inch LS engine that uses a Dart LSX Next block as its base. Williams opted to use the block with the short pan rails to gain a windage advantage with the engine. The All Pro heads used on the engine took over two years to develop and BES took one of All Pro’s intake manifolds and modified it to work with this high-rpm application. Inside the engine is a Callies billet crankshaft, GRP connecting rods, custom Ross pistons, a COMP camshaft, and T&D rocker arms. Finishing off the driveline is a bolt-together Coan converter and lightweight TH400 transmission from RPM Transmissions.

Williams just recently was able to get the Corvette finished up and to the track and he’s ready to really start leaning on the car to see what it can do.

“Right now we’ve only made less than 20 passes on the car but it improves each time we take it down the track. There’s a really big learning curve with over 1,000 horsepower on tap and just a 10.5-inch tire to put it down with. After we get this car sorted out I think it’s going to be very competitive in the NA 10.5 class. We feel that having a car like this to develop products is a huge advantage for the company and look forward to seeing what it can do.”

The NA 10.5 class continues to grow within the NMCA and Williams’ Corvette is an interesting addition to the mix. With a flashy yellow paint job, big horsepower, and screaming LSX-based engine it’s hard to miss this car.
